I’m lying here slightly guilty with my half dirty feet propped up on top of the guest bed listening to Mecana, a slack key guitarist serenading me through my Macbook. Its only about 10pm, but well past this island’s bedtime. Most people seem to be on that early rise track. 6am coffee rounds while Hal, the father of thie family I’m staying with fills you in on the latest politics and sport news. Lisa will be explaining the latest on her teaching schedule for the day. The boys will wake up one by one, if they are even home. The slightest creak from the refrigerator will get the other two hairy boys up. Ben and Bear, two fluffy, 4-legged mongrels skip to the kitchen with excitement as they await counter crumbs and pre-dishwashing cycles. I’ve just been squeezing my way into this family portrait for the past couple of weeks. Loving it actually.
If you ask me what I do everyday and contribute to this household… hmm let me see:
- -take the dogs for walks
- -paint
- -paddleboard
- -steal fruit off trees
- -graffiti a skatepark
- -drink PRIMO
- -attempt runs on the steep-as hills of upper Wailuku
- -learn to prepare the BEST guacamole
- -Help teach at Lisa’s charter school in Kihei
- -accompany the boys for surfing adventures
- -read
- -lyin on my back in search of shooting stars
- -riding on the back of motorcycles
- -searching for waterfalls
- -the ol online job search
- -bake dinners, banana bread, and cookies
- -play bball with sweaty locals in kihei and wailea
- -run errands with the fam
- -but most importantly…RELAX
It has been an incredible couple of weeks back with the Davis’ family in Maui. I can’t begin to dig through my pockets for evidence. I’ve had a blast. Haha man its kind of like a pre-retirement glimpse. Oh lord I can’t even picture an 70 year old me. Granny Jill. Haha far out. Speakin of the big Seven-zero. That’s the age my Grandma just turned. We’re celebrating it a bit late back in Wilmington NC. Can’t wait for that.
I’m still in shock here. Caught between both worlds at the moment. Maybe I should just hide-away here in Hawaii for awhile. longer I’ll be off to my next destination: Colorado…soon! And then in about a week, I’ll be back on wagon wheel ground. Comfy little North Carolina.
Can’t begin to explain how excited I am to go back and see everyone, but at the same time, I’m suffering, knowing that my life on the other half of the world is changing without me too.
In the end, I guess it just spans out to whatever makes you happy. Happiness is key.
On that note… I better cruise on over to Dreamland here.
Aloha. Sweet dreams cuzies!
