My schedule has been really flexible at the moment because all of the schools are on holidays and my Red Cross job is out of appointments. So these past couple of weeks I have been focusing on training, catching up with people and picking up as many shifts as I can at the gym.
Its been amazing having a bit of a break, especially over the weekends. Two weeks ago, I adventured out to a random little event hall in a farm community called Matamata for a friend’s storybook themed 21st. The night did not end there. Me and a few mates left a bit early to make it to the start of a late night, 7-stage concert series in town called SOUNDSCAPE! It’s is an electronic, hip hop, alternative festival they put together every term in the city. They block off all the back streets and alleyways and organize a maze of stages for young ravers to venture through. They also roll in carnival rides and your most candy floss (cotton candy) stand to spoil any beat junkie’s sweet tooth.
It was an epic night! Holy crap. I haven’t had that much fun in ages! Concerts have always been my thing though. And if any of you are familiar with Tiki Taane, I was so close, I could have reached for his shoelaces and yanked him off the stage. It was honestly the best night. When you buzz on the music the rest of the world seems to dance along. Just like Bob Marley’s quote:
“One good thing about Music, When it hits you feel No Pain”
It sounds crazy, but it’s true kids. Why do you think I spend so much time putting together playlists and burning cds for you all? Whether it be to cheer up, excite, relax, motivate, inspire, MUSIC is usually the rechargeable battery. It is recharged from the smiles and amateur voices of car-belting and shower-humming fans powering through their day. Life is so constant that we need something other than photographs to document it.
I’m sure you have had one of these experiences where a song comes on in the background of a movie, over the radio or in your Friday night pub that takes you back to a particular date and time. I know it helps with my memory.
For instance, when I hear “I love rock n roll… put another dime in the jukebox baby”
I am transported directly back to 8th grade. French braids and glitter. Number 21 on my blue and white reversible basketball jersey. Warming up to take on the dreaded St. Paul’s select team.
How about… “Father father father help us. Send some guidance from above. People got me got me questioning… Where is the love?
Haha. Crammed into my dads boxy-white Ford Explorer. Heat from the morning sun pouring through the windscreen and drying out our chlorine-clogged ears. My swim mates and I dogpiled in the backseat gathered around my dads ‘work’ cell phone with 99.1 FM’s number on speed dial sending out requests to the world. And of course, repeatedly requesting the Black-eyed Pea’s song.
Alright drumrolll… the next one that comes up on my iTunes shuffle
“Woaaahhh Mysterious girl I wanna get close to you… Woaaah move your body close to mine”
BEAUTIFUL, tranquil, crystal-clear coast of SAMOA. Sweaty bottle of beer in my left hand as I prance through the shallow waters and dredge for treasured shells with my toes. Summer-glazed tan kids wandering around the dusty dirt roads on search of excitement and new wonders.
Think of it like our TIME TRAVEL machine! Haha.
Wow well, I’ve carried you along on one of my usual rants again. Hahaha hope you’ve enjoyed it!
Goodnite world. x
